Freddy Lopez

Program Associate

Freddy Lopez joined Friends for Youth in September 2026 and brings more than 10 years of experience in youth development. Born and raised in East Palo Alto, Freddy’s connection to this work began as a young person himself. He participated in an after-school program where he developed a meaningful relationship with an unofficial mentor. While that relationship had a positive impact on his life, Freddy also experienced challenges that he now recognizes could have been supported through social-emotional learning (SEL).

Freddy began his professional journey as a student at UC Riverside, where he helped create an organization focused on empowering local youth through art programming, including Hip Hop, theater, and painting. He went on to work as an artist-in-residence and youth mentor at Live in Peace and continued supporting young people through organizations including Public Allies and Boys & Girls Club.

Freddy is passionate about empowering young people through SEL and continuing to learn how to better support youth and communities. He believes SEL should be a priority in education and is committed to helping young people develop the skills and support they need to navigate life.

As someone who experienced the impact of mentorship firsthand, Freddy is especially connected to Friends for Youth’s mission. He hopes to help more young people build relationships with mentors who can support them not only through mentorship, but by sharing the life skills that come through social-emotional learning.
