Learning from Mistakes: Strengthening Youth Safety
with Research-Based Screening Practices
Tuesday, February 28, 2012
10:00 am – 11:15 am PST
The past several months has seen multiple reports of respected and trusted adults accused of inappropriate sexual contact with children and youth. Friends for Youth has also seen an increase in the numbers of inquiries about our resource, SAFE (Screening Applicants for Effectiveness): Guidelines to Prevent Child Molestation in Mentoring and Youth-Serving Organizations) that many program staff use in screening and assessing their volunteers. We wanted to offer this webinar to take a closer look at Red Flags during the application and monitoring process – and how to use recommended tools to your advantage to uncover more information. This presentation will cover qualities and characteristics of perpetrators of child sexual abuse that we’ve learned from research on convicted child molesters and from our own 30+ year history of providing safe and effective mentors to vulnerable youth.
Program Director Sarah Kremer will be joined by Executive Director Becky Cooper, who co-authored our resource and first began looking into how to assess volunteers even before background checks were available. Please join us to learn more about keeping children and youth in your programs safe!

In addition to offering various webinars in 2012, Friends For Youth’s Mentoring Institute is teaming up with frequent collaborators Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota's Training Institute, Education Northwest/National Mentoring Center, Oregon Mentors and other partners in the coming year to deliver a monthly webinar series for mentoring professionals. Each quarter, the series will feature webinars focused on sharing ideas for mentoring practice, mentoring research "round-ups," and highlights of innovation in the mentoring field. By combining our individual efforts and collective wisdom, we will be able deliver even better webinars to a wider audience of mentoring professionals. Webinars will take place on the third Thursday of each month.
