Mentor Screening and Youth Safety:
Going Beyond the Background Check
This presentation focuses on the recommended tools and approaches from our resource SAFE (Screening Applicants for Effectiveness): Guidelines to Prevent Child Molestation in Mentoring and Youth-Serving Organizations that many programs already use in screening and assessing their volunteers. Adaptable to both those new to the field and those who are experienced in the field, this workshop addresses what is recommended and why, as well as how to use both subjective and objective components to make the best decision. Additionally, research gathered in the writing of the Mentor Screening and Youth Protection chapter for the 2nd edition of the Handbook on Youth Mentoring, scheduled for release in 2012, will be reviewed. Mentoring 101
Starting a new mentoring program? Trying to improve your program’s structure to make it even better? Managers and staff of new and existing mentoring programs will receive an introduction or refresher to mentoring and program development in Mentoring 101. This will include: program start-up/enhancement, Recommended Best Practices, implementation, evaluation, program sustainability, and resources. The training is experiential--participants actually apply these concepts to their individual programs.

Mentor Training
Having well-prepared mentors can help your program run smoothly. Our Mentor Training covers a number of issues that are important for volunteers working with youth. Topics such as effective communication and setting boundaries will help your volunteers start their mentoring relationships with a strong foundation. The training is interactive and fun, allowing volunteers to share their experiences while presenting the latest research and Recommended Best Practices.
