Be a Mentor!
The process to become a mentor begins with attending an Information Session - a brief introduction to the program, needs of Junior Friends, and steps required to become a mentor.  From interview to training, the application steps assist us in finding the best possible match for each Senior Friend.

Be a Mentor to a great young person!  Friends for Youth's Mentoring Services program coordinates opportunities for volunteers to become mentors, or "Senior Friends".  Senior Friends are adults from a wide array of educational, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.  Each has a common desire to directly support the youth of their community through a one-to-one relationship with a young person.

These young people, or "Junior Friends", are between the ages of 8 and 17.  They are referred by teachers, counselors, or other youth professionals as needing a positive, supportive adult in their lives. Junior and Senior Friends spend an average of two hours a week together for at least one year.  This time is spent learning about new people, places, and things; exploring new opportunities; and getting to know and trust one another.
MENTOR NOW INITIATIVE: July-September 2010
Friends for Youth is currently experiencing a surge in youth referrals, and in order to respond to this increased need for mentors we are making efforts to accelerate the application process for mentor applicants. In short, we anticipate creating many more mentoring matches this summer! Beginning July 1, 2010, Friends for Youth launched its Mentor Now Initiative, allowing the organization to provide incentives to applicants for quickly completing their application process. Sign up for a Be A Mentor Information Session to learn more. We hope this initiative will help facilitate getting more applicants matched with a youth-in-need soon!
